Larry Landis

Painter

Exhibition Dates: June - August 2025

Artist Bio:

"My journey with painting began in high school, when I lived near the L.A. County Museum. I spent many weekends studying Renaissance paintings - those quiet hours in the museum likely kept me out of trouble and planted the seed for what would become a lifelong passion.

I stepped away from painting for a while, but even during my time in the Air Force - including a tour in Vietnam - I found moments to create. After my service ended in 1973, I went on to study engineering in St. Pual. The technical training led to a job at Sperry/Univac as a technical illustrator, where I refined my drawing skills. While there, I also took studio art classes at the University of Minnesota. The figure drawing and sculpture courses enhanced my ability to visualize and map out complex machinery, which became a key part of my role - sketching equipment in Sperry’s factories for military manuals.

Over the years, my path wove through various roles in aviation and the Army Reserves. In 2003, after being mobilized for the Iraq War and serving a stressful but creatively awakening year, I retired from the military. During that deployment, I did manage to complete four small paintings.

Back home, I studied classical painting at the Minneapolis Ateller and later trained privately with several master artists. These studies immersed me in 17th century techniques, particularly the Dutch and Flemish methods of layered oil painting.

For a long time, I called myself an artist. Buth then I came across something Rembrandt once said to a friend: “Show me his line, and I’ll tell you if he’s an artist.” Ever since, I’ve preferred to call myself a painter. I keep in mind that talent is a gift loaned to us from God - not something earned, but something entrusted to us. And I try to honor that gift every time I pick up the brush."

A Tribute to George and Joan Bohlig

George and Joan Bohlig were foundational members of Peace Church, each contributing their unique gifts, passions, and perspectives. George, the pragmatist, leader, and logical thinker, complemented Joan’s visionary, creative, and aesthetic nature. Together, they brought an unparalleled depth of experience and faith as they followed Jesus within our community.

As they neared the end of their earthly journey, George and Joan made plans to share art in perpetuity at Peace Church. Through their generosity, the Bohlig Art Memorial was established, providing a space for the display of local artists' works.

We are honored to present a retrospective exhibition of Joan Bohlig’s artwork as our inaugural display. In Joan’s words, “All my art has been made for the glory of God, and the hope is that it will visually speak messages of God, his word, and the beauty of his world.”

George and Joan exemplified the “attraction of opposites,” with their differences strengthening their partnership. Through the Bohlig Art Display, we hope to create a space where beauty, curiosity, and connection can flourish. As poet Jeremy Nobel wrote, “The poet in me imagines a different world, a world of connection and creativity.”

Lord, may this artwork usher us into deeper connection and creativity — all to the Glory of God! Amen.
